By Jeff Scalf Having heard and seen this band's name around for quite a while now and known of its reputation as a divinely brutal band I was very anxious to hear the hype...And hype is right! This Dutch quintet lives up to it wholeheartedly! Right off the bat their odd way of writing is noticed and appreciated. Having a very heavy sound is only the start of this band's brutality, as they keep the intensity high and the mood hyper with even the slower parts having a hectic way about them. This album takes a weird journey from grindish Death Metal slowly into what treads on Black Metal territory (all the while having a solid although ever-so-slight traditional feel to it) yet certainly not being such and continues onward to bring things full circle. While this album is definitely brutal and in-your-face, there is a complexity to its makeup as well, keeping in mind the need for originality with a dash here and there of keys as well. And the faint edge of melody adds the final touch to make this thing float while others sink. In a time when competition in the field of brutality runs high and many seek a piece of the spotlight, I can certainly see this band poking its head above the rest. To appropriately sum it up only one word is needed: Killer! ©1999, BBHrdRpt |
