Tribute to Metallica By: Johathan Mariante |
Another Metallica tribute album? Do we really need yet another one of these? I am just sick to death of Metallica, if I hear their name one more time, I'll puke! Don't these guys get enough publicity and hype as it is? Aren't there other bands out there? But, on the other hand...this IS a pretty good album. Some of these songs sound more Metallica than Metallica! Most of the bands on here are death/thrash/black metal type bands, some of which I'd never heard of before. Metallica, of course, was a big influence on this genre, so it is fitting. The album kicks off with Mystifier, doing a thrashing version of "Phantom Lord". Next comes Krabathor with their version of "The Four Horsemen", which is nothing special, but has some good soloing in it. Next on tap is Solarisis, a one-man band who totally rearranges "Nothing Else Matters", turning it from a rather boring ballad into a headbanging black metal tune! Never thought I'd do the "air guitar" thing with this song! Pretty cool! This is followed by power metallers New Eden who do an excellent version of "Ride The Lightning". These guys can shred! They have been making waves in the power metal scene, and hopefully will soon get the recognition they deserve! After this comes another more traditional metal band, Last Chapter, with "Escape", which is OK, but really just a photocopy of the original, right down to the sirens at the end of the song. Up next are Soulless with "Motorbreath", always one of my favorite Metalli-tunes! The playing is good, but the singer sounds like he has a poisonous snake crawling up his ass! Noctuary are next with "Leper Messiah". They stay true to the original, but manage to hold their own at the same time. They're followed by From The Depths who deliver "For Whom The Bell Tolls", not straying too far from the original, aside from the death-metal style singing/screaming. Next in line are Abominant, who completely tear "Battery" to shreds, giving a whole new meaning to the word! Then comes Blasphemy Divine, who growl and grunt their way through "Welcome Home/Sanitarium". Oops! Missed one! Track number 9 is by Diabloic, whose cover of "The God That Failed" is the only latter-day Metallica song to appear on the album. I've actually never heard the original, so I can't compare them, but judging by the direction Metallica has gone in lately, I'm sure Diabolic's version is heavier and more "metallic" (pun intended!) that the original. The album closes out with Coffin Texts doing "The Call Of Ktulu". Since this is an instrumental, there's not much difference between this and the original, except that CT's version sounds a bit more raw. Personally, I never dug this song that much, even when I was a Metallica fan. I always found it to be a bit long and boring. I wish the Coffins had done another song, like "Hit The Lights", or something. But anyway, there you have it. One of zillions of Metallica tribute albums, and it's actually pretty damn good. If you're one of the many people who's lost your faith in the once-mighty Metallica, you'll probably enjoy this album. It sure as hell kicks the shit out of anything Metallica has done lately!
