By Pete Wadeson Unfashionable as it may seemingly be, melodic metal does appear to be making somewhat of a return, especially when you look at the success bands such as Angra and those stalwarts of true metal, Manowar, are experiencing from certain territories in Germany in particular and in Japan. Fashionable or not, Dream Child are worthy exponents of melodic-based progressive metal, at times not unlike Dream Theater and the aforementioned Brazilian supergroup Angra themselves. Standout tracks are the album opener, "To Our Dreams," the epic "Bells Of Nemesis," "Alchemy" and the twisting speed riffing of instrumental "Kadesh Battle." "Reaching The Golden Gate" has plenty of light and shade and displays plenty of musical talent, non the least the fretboard histrionics of guitarist Dominique Leurquin, but that's only part of Dream Child's appeal. Highly recommended if melodic metal's your particular thing. ©1999, BBHrdRpt |
