ENUFF Z'NUFF
"Paraphernalia"
Spitfire Records

By Brynn McKenna

The last Enuff Z'nuff CD, as I recall, was a little too kidsy and had way too many Beatles clone songs on it. Well, on "Paraphernalia" they band dropped the kidsy thing, but there are still quite a few Beatlesque moments to be heard. The band adds Cheap Trick, Elvis Costello and '80s pop metal to the list and yup, you can hear it all in this 14-song collection. Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, Styx's James Young and Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan have all added their loving touches to these songs. "Freak" has a cool psychedelic modern rock vibe, like the '60s meet the '90s head on. "Top Of The Hill" has '60's/'70s/'90s sensibilities. "Believe In Love" is a sexually strange Beatlesque number. "Unemotional" is a slow rock ballad with early-'70s music and '90s lyrics. In fact, you'll find angst laced throughout this collection. "Someday" reminds me of White Lion. Remember them? You'll hear all the above plus some jazz-rock, grunge and punk as well. There are a number of ballads on this album. The music and the vocals are of excellent quality, but whether one digs this album or not will depend upon where their musical tastes lie.
