By Pete Wadeson There's no or has there ever been any disputing the fine vocal talents of Glenn Hughes. In fact, if you were to compile a list of truly great rock singers - Hughes would have to be in it. First coming to the fore as the bassist/vocalist with Trapeze in the early seventies Hughes has had an eclectic and tumulus career to say the least - along the way working with such luminaries as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, guesting with Gary Moore on the guitarist's "Run For Cover" album and contributing vocals to Whitesnake's "Slip Of The Tongue." Since then Glenn's personal problems have been well-documented even if Hughes himself dealt openly about things he himself was experiencing with the "Addiction" album released back in '96. This was a welcome return to his classic hard rock roots of which Hughes on previous solo outings seemed to be leaning away from. And so to the present and his most recent solo venture, the openly entitled "The Way It Is." Soaked in the richness of the man's bluesy tones, Hughes is joined on the album by musicians of the calibre of Keith Emerson, Matt Sorum and Stevie Salas. Not that Hughes needs any props these days as his songwriting skills and vocal talents shine through on each and every track. ©1999, BBHrdRpt |
