By Brynn McKenna One look at the old-west saloon motif of the CD artwork, and you might just think this is country music. I got a pleasant surprise when I put this 11-track CD into my player. It's not country music at all. Fans of '70s bluesy classic rock with some honky-tonk piano laced in there will love this. The musicianship is impeccable, particularly the fretwork, which ranges from heavy to soulfully, emotionally bluesy, and the piano/organ. There are two singers. One is excellent, and the other isn't quite as strong and consistent. "Money, Pride & Greed" has an almost late '60s, early '70s psychedelic vibe. "Eatin' Crow" will make you think '70s. "My Bags Are Packed" is honky-tonk rock at its finest. "Sweet Sustain" is an emotional tribute to a deceased band-member. My only complaint is the couple of instances where one of the vocalists fell into an alternaVedder vocal pattern, something I hope upcoming singers start getting away from now that the '90s are almost over with. Overall, this is fine listening and worth obtaining. Check out their website at: www.theregulators.com ©1999, BBHrdRpt |
