By Jeff Scalf I had picked up this band's Double live CD "Visions of Europe" through tape trading and other than this I was previously unfamiliar with their work, although I did know that they had a good reputation. Having liked their live album quite a bit, I was very glad to see that we got this release. These Fins play true Power Metal, with a classical slant to their dynamic songwriting. Going into their 15th year of existence, and after many successful studio albums (6 to be exact) and a double live album, the band set out to issue its newest and 'said to be' most diverse album of its career in the form of "Destiny." This album has already debuted at #1 in their home land of Finland, and has garnered many rave reviews from all around the world. And quite frankly, another to the list! Stratovarius are the embodiment of sheer class and raw talent. What they make are not merely songs but journeys in themselves, as each individual element of the band comes together to make up a single whole. With Power Metal being their definite standing, this is merely the shell of the band becuase they take things a bit beyond with near rock-like, almost ballad-esque numbers and searing choruses (which are truly impressive), all the while embodying the unique talents of keyboardist Jes Johansson, vocalist Timo Kotipelto, Guitarist Timo Tolkki and bring things full circle with the Powerful double bassing drumwork of Jorg Michael. Melodic and wild yet plentiful and massive, this band is downright impressive. ©1999, BBHrdRpt |
