By Jym Harris I remember a time before the Glam/Thrash split, when Heavy Metal was just that; Heavy Metal. Bands wore spikes, spandex, eye make-up, and had shoulder length feathered hair. The post-NWOBHM thing was just starting up in America. Ahh, the memories. Axe Master reminds of THAT time. This is a collection of previously released material in chronological order, and appears to be three different line-ups (all including guitarist/songwriter Joe Sims). The first two sound similar, but the last sessions sound the best. Vocalist Rick Barker is certainly the saving grace. The early subject matter is all (you guessed it!) dungeons & dragons, but later in the disc, they get more personal. I would suggest this disc to anyone who liked the bands that were on labels like Combat & Mausoleum in the early 80’s.
