cutthroat

By Beca Marshall

Maybe I'm spoiled. Being from NJ, there are a million bands that are trying to do the same thing as Cutthroat, only the NJ bands do it better. Cutthroat is a rock band with an 80's edge that ends up opening for national acts, that were big in the 80's, at local clubs. This is not to say that Cutthroat is a bad band, there is just nothing that grabbed me about them. "So Far Down" which is track two on the album, has some cool riffs in the beginning but loses it's appeal halfway through. The songwriting is boring and the solos can use some work. Vocally, Sean Okin is lacking power, emotion and range. "Living in Anger" is more humorous then angry. It starts off with, "Goddamn, piss me off!" Not only does Cutthroat not really distinguish itself from other bands, their songs don't even distinguish themselves from one another. "Lock me Up" is a feeble attempt at the token ballad that plagues every rock album but it doesn't quite cut it. The lyrics are cheesy at best and although I love 80's metal, Cutthroat ranks with the likes of Warrior Soul type 80's metal, way on the bottom.
