By Vinnie Apicella I didn't need to hear a note and I hate 'em already! They're still only in High School and already their climbing up the ladder of success… and what was I doing back then? Yeah that's right, thanks for nothing Dave Meniketti! Alright but jealousy aside, Kittie is a new breed of all-girl rockers that show just how far heavy music has come since the days of… Vixen! However The Great Kat's another story-I mean, she's sick! But anyway, these girls are incomprehensibly mature in the way they go about their business; They've got a strong mindset with how they approach music and what they want to get across with the likes of "Spit," "Suck," and "Do you Think I'm a Whore" that on the inside, are not as we'd expect. But then again, who would've expected this in the first place? Now this is the point where I was gonna get into my "Josie & the Pussycats from Hell" crack but of course some bastard beat me to it… with a name like "Kittie" what are you gonna do? They're Canadian actually so we'll go with Alanis times four with a whole lotta… balls! Astuteness is one of Kittie's strong points, aside from parlaying a thunderous power chord into an all-out frenzied crash drive of a song-try "Brackish" and you'll hear immediately they rank right up with the best of today's aggro-rock specialists-they want to be taken seriously! I can only wonder how Morgan Lander's voice holds up live-well she's young so she's got plenty of time before any significant damage sets in. The tunes are pretty short and to the point, and the constant grind of the guitar is edgy enough to keep the Advil bottle working overtime. Yeah they got their groove on in a big way but the Spice Girls they are not! After about ten songs into the available twelve, the last two display another side to the sound-a little slower, more exploratory, less driven and more subtle-"Paperdoll" which does in fact reveal that there is a pretty voice behind the wall of screaming! Cute song-"One size fits all…" Hmm, what are we getting at? Kittie though, has a powerful message for everyone with this stunning debut, "Spit" and it's got something to do with being careful about false assumptions and ill-advised pretentiousness… or maybe it's fuck off! It basically amounts to the same thing anyway but now here for the grand finale as things draw to a close. Kittie: they'll scratch and claw their way-gratuitous cat analogy-right to the top ranking metal veterans on the scene today as they tear away at the existing pride and prejudice of a male-dominated genre with every trashy note they rattle off while setting a new industry standard! |
