SEVENTH OMEN
"Polarized"
Septagram Records

By Tate Bengtson

This band's biography boasts that Seventh Omen is "redefining metal for the new millennium" and, while that statement goes a bit too far given what I am hearing on Polarized, it still stands as a solid album. Playing fluid power metal with a focus on commercial hooks that doesn't downplay the band's technical playing abilities, Seventh Omen seems to be attempting to find an acceptable median position between hard rock and heavy metal. The result is reminiscent of newer Queensryche with thrashy, memorable guitar licks, and a bit of a progressive bent. The band's songwriting is fluid and engaging, constantly diving and surging with energy and precision while retaining focus, which makes Seventh Omen's songwriting quite palatable. The vocals generally stick to the mid to high register and have a bit of a sneer that may turn off some, although it generally doesn't disrupt the music once you grow accustomed to its tone (although there were a few screeches that had me cringing). I like the manner in which this band merges power metal with a commercialized strain of thrash, and the band's songwriting approach is also commendable and suggests a great deal of potential for future success, although there are still a few wrinkles in the band's formula.
