Spiders and Snakes

By Vinnie Apicella

"Got it if you want it… Nonstop Rock!" The second song on the fifth installment from L.A.'s strip veterans cries out in unison-so loudly in fact that all those people who once layered both sides of Sunset can still hear 'em from ten years ago! Sentimentally well-spoken, Spiders & Snakes, led by Lizzie Grey, a man with a history large enough to live off of till the next millennium, places the finger firmly on the rewind button of the cassette player, turns up the volume good and loud and out blares "Party in Hollywood," "Radio Stars" …and how bout the early Motley classic "Public Enemy #1" first appearing on their "Too Fast for Love" album! "London Daze" brings home a little piece of the past, recalling Grey's early days with the infamous London-slithering, if you will, between jaded junk rock, injecting full doses of melody and chorus-having once featured the likes of Nikki Sixx and Mott the Hoople's Nigel Benjamin… in fact you can hear 'em on the tail end here with the added bonus of three original cuts from London's original demo from back in 1980! No, there's nothing wrong with your hearing-a truer definition of "original" there never was. Back to the "cover" of "Public Enemy #1," it's got a fair front of thunder during the chorus, but mainly follows in the footsteps of the original. Grey's vocals were meant for the Hollywood glam scene without a doubt. In fact, while Spiders & Snakes fit the bill of your typical, or what was atypical of the pop/metal spray can fashion fodder that made the strip famous, there's a distinctly whimsical nature among the material lending a degree of punk-like charm, and there's no denying the extra octane boost behind the recording-quite unlike many you may have once loved or loathed from back in the day. "Elvis's TV" will take care of any doubts about the preceding statement-and we'll drop the crown on the "Rock and Roll Queen" as well-a natural side-effect from those London Daze maybe? Trash & Vaudeville must make a million annually from these guys-but they know how to rock, and five albums in, it looks like these creepy-crawlers will continue to infest listeners without any practical means of disposal…
