By Brynn McKenna SR-71 is a stealth aircraft capable of flying to the edge of outer space at Mach 3.2+. It's also the name of Baltimore's premiere band. Listen to this 11-song collection and you will do just as the title says. You will see inside the musical psyches of this very talented quartet. The musicianship, the arrangements and the lyrics are fresh, unique and original and the vox of Mitch Allen are incredible. This is a young band, but they possess a maturity far beyond their years in terms of song topics, lyrics and musical arrangement. I dig the fact that they are not trying to be a clone of anybody. There is purpose and meaning to their songs; these guys are not bitching, whining and moaning. They have been described as "polished pandemonium" and that's right on the money. Their sometimes punk-tinged modern rock sound kicks royal ass, revealing a distinct British inflection. They name acts like Beatles, Queen, The Police and Duran Duran as influences. Every single song on this CD is a winner in its own right. Standouts include the excellent "Politically Correct" and "What A Mess." "Empty Spaces" is rather romantic and "Alive" is an introspective number about a woman who finds the courage to leave an abusive relationship. "Fame (What She's Wanting) rocks. "Paul McCartney" is strange but cool and is reminiscent of some of the former Beatle's solo work. In short, this album is a must-have. |
