The Step Kings

By Vinnie Apicella

Their crushing debut for Roadrunner proves another jewel in the crown for NYC underground as they quickly make their ascendancy to the aggro-rock throne. The power trio known as The Step Kings have already made an impressive showing with their grind it out style and win at all costs attitude with this, their eighth step up from their previously independent release "Seven Easy Steps." Though by no means easy, The Step Kings have earned a solid reputation as a touring act that brings full throttle power from the stage to the studio where "Let's Get it On" screams to be heard and accepts any challenges thrown their way. "Vibe" gets things underway in a most defiant fashion, with a heavy-thumping bassline clearing a path for the uprising surge of unfriendly power chords and vocalist Bob McLynn's angry wail-it's an immediate call to arms to anyone who's ever possessed a independent thought but never found the means to present it to the public. Jumping right into one of my favorites, "Independence Day," the same may well be said of this one, in fact more so, as the pace picks up quite a bit-and "fuck what you say!" Declaring their independence in the finest Bad Religion tradition, this one's got more of hard-core punk vibe to it than anything else before it. "One and One" is another high flyer which settles the pace down somewhat, sticking again to a melodically paved path during the chorus that if we're to go by the first couple of tracks is somewhat unexpected. There's nothing subtle about The Step Kings by any means, but far from being your average run of the mill, look at me I'm angry why aren't you rock band, they're capable of firing up an audience while just as easily settling 'em in with a unifying rhythm pattern that goes far beyond random acts of senseless slamming-"Friends," "Move On." "Let's Get it On!" will be one to watch in the months ahead as more and bands take notice, The Step Kings should have long since earned their stripes as the class of this new power generation and anyone who still hasn't gotten it by then can get to steppin'!
