Ten
"Spellbound"
Frontiers Records

By Jym Harris

What a great cover!  Bats flying out of a castle, lightning hitting a dragon (I think???), and a winged babe on a unicorn.  The best part is that the album lives up to the artwork!  I've always loved the Whitesnake sounding 'Name Of The Rose', and thought Gary Hughes sounded like Coverdale...but without the range.  His voice is so polished and accurate, but it's sooo mid-range.  Still, the melodies on this disc are so fucking good, you almost don't notice how low he's singing.  At times, I'm reminded of Zach-era Savatage.   With the exception of one song, 'Spellbound' was written entirely by Hughes himself, and is maybe the best Melodic Hard Rock/AOR album I've heard this year.  A dozen addictive anthems in all.  Where would I rate this CD on a scale from one to TEN?... Take a guess.
