"Shout At The Remix: Motley Crue Tribute"
"Hot For Remixes: Van Halen Tribute"
Cleopatra Records

By Tate Bengtson

Take a bunch of glam/hard rock musicians, get them to record covers for a tribute album, and then have those covers remixed by elektro artists - it’s an interesting twist on the stale tribute album concept even if many of the songs fail to pan out.

The Motley Crue tribute kicks off in fine form with a bang-on rendition of “Live Wire” by Steve Summers which gets worked over by Die Krupps, who adds thudding industrial rhythms to the mix. The following cut, a drum-and-bass reworking of “Piece of Your Action,” offers some nice d&b, although the actual cover is too restrained and passionless to make much of an impact. The other really cool cut is the rockin’ version of “Shout at the Devil” by the Electric Hellfire Club. Unfortunately, there are just too many mediocre or downright ugly cuts that reduces my enjoyment of this album.

The Van Halen tribute falls into basically the same category as above, although the remixes seem to have taken a more liberal stab at reworking the tracks - sometimes with positive results, and more often with negative consequences. Compound that with the fact that I am not a huge Van Halen fan to begin with, and I cannot see myself returning to this very often.
