By Tate Bengtson Self-described as coven funk, this is the first ambient dub concept album that I can recall hearing. Vampire Nation revels in deep bass rhythms and layers of sampled and keyboard atmospheres, which exist in a fluid, hypnotic mixture. Vampire Nation’s ability to conjure mesmerizing grooves is impressive, and this album also displays a good sense of dynamics and tempo changes from song to song in order to keep things interesting. Every now and then, the mood is disrupted with some effects which sound like they were lifted from a primitive Casio keyboard, but this is generally competent and consistent in quality, making for a fine bit of groovin’ background music suitable for those more mellow moods where Carcass, Brutal Truth, or Napalm Death just don’t seem to be appropriate.
