Corporate Avenger is a
rather silly name for a band, but that is where the silliness ends.
These guys have got something to say, and they're dead serious about
it, and are very up front about their points of view, too. Song titles
like "Christians Murdered Indians", "Fault The Police", "Taxes Are Stealing",
"Web Of Lies" and "Voting Doesn't Work" alone tell you what these guys
are all about. Musically, they could be considered a "nu-metal" band,
as most of the singing is rapping, and there are many other elements
of rap, such as scratching and samples, in their songs, along with the
fuzztone, "aggro" guitars. They are, however, much more aggressive that
your average Limp Bizkit clone, both in their music and their message.
These guys aren't pulling any punches, their going for the "in your
face" approach, and they obviously want their message to be heard. There
are also many spoken-word parts in their songs, where they speak their
minds about what they are singing about. The first song, the aforementioned
"Christians...", begins like this, the song being about how the American
natives were cheated, enslaved, and slaughtered by Christopher Columbus
and people like him. They also lash out against the government, the
police, organized religion, homophobia, the judicial system, and society
in general. Some people may initially get the wrong idea from some of
their songs, with titles like "The Bible Is Bullshit" and "Jesus Christ
Homosexual". However, there is more to these songs than meets the eye.
"The Bible..." is about the damage Christianity, as an organized religion,
has done to the world, and "...Homosexual" is an outcry against homophobia,
suggesting that maybe homosexuality was all part of the Plan. It goes
without saying, of course, that many, if not all, of what they are saying
is true. Everybody knows it, but nobody seems to want to do anything
about it, so perhaps the Avengers are trying to give us a wake-up call.
I admire them for their stand and their points of view, even though
their style of music isn't my cup of tea. Forgot to mention, the closing
track, "Heavens Joke", which is, surprisingly, a ballad. Couldn't understand
the words all that well, but it sounds like, as always, they're trying
to get a message across, just in a different way, or maybe they just
felt like mellowing out. Anyway, these guys are certainly interesting.
They give a much-needed new twist on the whole "nu-metal" thing, and
if other bands follow in their footsteps, we may have a second American
Revolution on our hands, at least in terms of music. Hail the Avenger!
