Downflow
"We Are Not Alone"
Independent
By Jonathan Mariante This "Downflow" are definitely a wierd and wacky bunch. Led by DeAnna Hagen, they have relased a five-song CD, their debut, "We Are Not Alone". Their music is a hybrid of many different styles. On the one hand, it is dark and twisted, with influence from NIN and Marilyn Manson. DeAnna wails, moans and screams, as if in agony. There is metallic guitar playing from her and lead guitarist Dave (last names of the other members were not given). The lyrics sound like they come from disturbed and tortured mind. However, on the other hand, we have funky bass playing from Justin and some jazz influenced drumming from Ron, adding some diversity to the music, as well as a lighter side. One song that stood out is the closing track, "12 Volt". It's a jazzy little number, about a girl who hates her boyfriend, and is "thinking of ways to try to kill" him. The disc closes with a demented, but hilarious, parody of a 50's-style commercial on how to avoid germs. This was my favorite part of the album! I can't honestly say this is my favorite kind of music, but it certainly is intersting and different. At least these guys (and girl) are doing something original. Originality is certainly not the name of the game in rock and roll these days, so Downflow deserves kudos for that, if nothing else.
