"inject the truth"
Scheer Energy Records

by: Jonathan Mariante

Inject the truth? Well, the truth is, this is not a great album. I found it rather dull and boring. The music is flat, drab, and lacking in substance. It relies a lot on keyboards and electronics, too much so, really, and is played slow. It sort of reminded me of new wave/pop bands of the 80's like Mr. Mister and Mike and the Mechanics, only not as good (not that those bands were that good to begin with). Singer/guitarist Spencer Scheer's voice is rather toneless, and the playing is half-assed and dull. The music is basically soft rock which, as I said, makes much use of electronic keyboards and drum programming, much like the aforementioned bands of the 80's. There were two songs which I found only vaguely interesting, and those were the last two on the album; "Looking For Love", which has a rockier beat, and is a bit more kick-y than the other songs on the album; and the last song, "Don't Call It Love", another slightly rockier number with some jazz and blues influences. It is the one song on the disc that doesn't employ the use of electronics, and it contains some harmonica work and George Benson-style guitar playing, a bit like Blues Traveler or Hootie, I guess. Those things made this song stand out, but only just. This album really did nothing for me. Snoozeville. Dull music, dull singing, dull everything, played by only marginally talented musicians. Recommended to insomniacs only.
