By Vinnie Apicella Amongst the opening of the press release for this CD, it reads: "There are nearly a million people who own Harleys and countless more who wish they did." And oh, they're so right! And since this is about as close as I'll get to owning one for the next few years, I guess it'll have to do. And for those fellow wannabe owners, do yourselves a favor and don't look through the insert. it won't make you feel any better! "Legendary Road Songs" typifies the perfect marriage of rock and roll and riding-the power, the freedom, the rebelliousness. few can understand who've never experienced either at one time or another. It just works. Most will understand the concept and there's probably going to be few surprises here as to the bands that made the cut-of course you've got your good 'ol American rock bands whose roadway anthems have cut through the course for decades of listeners-your BTO's, your Seger's, your Skynyrds.. What, no Skynyrd? Hmm. don't know what happened there. But of course ZZTop who belong right there in the middle of anything to do with motorsports, hands down! And then there's Thorogood and his "Move it on Over" but then again pick just about any of his songs and they just fit. So as we trip through those great all American and some International classics, as Sabbath's "Neon Knights," which is a bit of a surprise though welcome, Steve Miller's "Rock 'N Me," the 'Dead's "Touch of Grey," which is as well peculiar. I'm not a Dead fan but surely there must have been some more directly related motor-bikin' tunes than this old ditty! I'm going off too much on a literal tangent-these tunes weren't necessarily written to epitomize a mid-Western bike rally or hoggin' down the highway necessarily but each in its own respect captures the true spirit of rock and roll and in essence applies to the overall vibe of cruisin' out in the night. The revving engine starts the "Intro" here and leads the way for Whitesnake's mega-hit "Still of the Night" which still sounds as killer today as it did thirteen years ago-hey, like great bikes, this music's timeless! "Sun King" by The Cult is an absolute necessity for all things set to motion-it just rocks, nuff said! Now before we move on to my quick briefing on what I would've also had to include-and the list can go on for miles, right?, here's a few more killer cuts that'll make ya wanna strap on the helmet, snap on the leather and kick start the mutha-Lizzy's "Boys are Back in Town," yes, this works; Scorpions' "Rock you Like a Hurricane," and how bout "L.A. Woman?" This one comes compliments of old Vital Idol himself and not the Doors classic, which is a bit of a shock as well. I don't care for the Poison tune "Ride the Wind" but I can see how it might make sense contextually. but it's Poison. Now how about saving some room for Priest's "Hell Bent for Leather" or "Desert Plains?" Maybe "Headin' Out to the Highway" though I guess they did the drag race video thing with that one so maybe. Really most any Priest song when you get right down to it! The Crue? Obviously we're looking for the big name commercial hits here so that discounts quite a few of the ones running through my suddenly swelled head but there's the classic biker band Circus of Power who for a brief moment in time had airplay on their side and are deserving of mention. Hey, take your pick, no one will really have a problem with this collection. maybe except for those who oppose motorcycles but then again, that's their problem. Let 'em eat metal! |
