HATE
"Holy Dead Trinity"
World War 3

By:Tate Bengtson

Due to the lack of natural borders separating Poland from Germany and Russia, the country has often been the target of expansionist aims by territorial revisionists over the centuries. Perhaps some aspect of that uncertainty and anger resulting from being an object of international contestation has been filtered through Hate's music, although the title of the album would suggest that the band is perhaps filled with more contempt for the Catholic-dominated government of Poland, and religion in general. Whatever the object of Hate's anger, its name is very fitting given the irate brutality that abounds on Holy Dead Trinity. While Poland has been garnering a reputation for cranking out some absolutely levelling musical extremity, most notably Vader, Hate is more likely to draw comparisons to American death metal bands such as Deicide. Violently oscillating guitar riffs and innard-pulverizing drum rhythms hark to the early 90s death metal explosion in Florida, particularly Deicide and, to a lesser extent, Morbid Angel. The vocalist sticks to low-pitched grunts and growls, sadly not incorporating many psychotic screeches, although there is at least some hint that the singer is aware of the value of enunciation and inflection. I believe that this album is actually a compilation of tracks from several of the band's previous albums, which would make sense because, while the album as a whole possesses a quality sound, there is a slight dip in the recording volume and playing style beginning with the sixth track. Definitely nothing that detracts in a serious way from this album though. Word has it that Hate has completed work on its next album, Cain's Way, which promises to be a seething mass of death metal malevolence.
