Ill Nino
"Revolution / Revolucion"
2001 (Roadrunner Records)

By Jonathan Mariante

Ill Nino are one of several bands who took their cue from Sepultura, combining elements of "World music" with metal/hard rock. In Ill Nino's case, they use Spanish/Latin music, with Spanish style guitar and Latino-style percussion, such as hand-beaten drums, as the band members are Latino-American in origin, even singing in Spanish in some places, and integrate it into their aggressive hard rock music. In fact, the closing track, "With You", is basically an entirely Latin music track. It is a ballad played on Spanish guitar, and is a mournful, sad little tune. The rest of their music is very aggressive and angry, in the vein of Slipknot, Rage Against The Machine, and Pantera. They also use elements of "nu metal", such as rapping and scratching in some songs. The scratching was done by a DJ named "DJ Skratch". Original, huh? Unfortunately, I also have the same to say about the rest of the band. While they are reasonably good musicians, and their music packs a mean punch, they really just sound like so much other stuff out there today, and all their songs kind of sound the same, aside from the aforementioned "With You". Aside from the use of Latin music, which they really only add sprinkles of anyway, they are not really doing anything new, and it just seems like they are trying to ride the coat tails of what is the flavor of the month. They are talented enough to stand alone, so they really should try something more original.
