Knut

If there was such a
thing as an aesthetics of musical ugliness, then the
vile sonic visage of Knut would most certainly fit well into such a
category. Pulsating rhythms guide each song along a twisted path, with
frenzied guitar assaults searing the eardrums with a controlled
noisecore approach that is particularly effective on the slow, rolling
riffs of the dizzying "Engine". While I would not make the
claim that
Knut is particularly original in its approach, its songwriting is tight
and effective, and the band smartly does not overplay to the detriment
of song cohesion. Unfortunately, there are not any moments on
Bastardiser that I would consider to be jaw-droppingly amazing, though
it is certainly an entertaining and very heavy listen. Whether that is
enough to justify further investigation of this album is probably
directly proportional to your interest in noisecore. I quite enjoy the
genre, and Knut certainly plays this form of music with style and
conviction, but I am not hearing a lot that really wins my favor for
this particular band over other similar-sounding bands. But still, a
quality release.
