Mighty Sideshow By: Jonathan Mariante |

This strangely-monickered band seem a little confused as to what direction they want to go in. They can't seem to decide if they want to be Pantera or a Pearl Jam/Creed type band. Their album is a checkerboard of elements of both. Singer/guitarist Alan Whitener's singing is similar to Eddie Vedder's or Creed's singer, while the rest of the band plays crunchy, groove-laden rock a la Pantera. The first two songs, "Throwing Rocks" and "Karma" are in this vein. The third song, "Taste The Rain", is a ballad more in the style of Pearl Jam. Next up is the title track, a Bayou-flavored, bluesy number. The rest of the songs basically just sound like a watered-down Pantera, except for "Charades", which once again ventures into Pearl Jam/Creed territory. This CD didn't do much for me. To begin with, there are already too many bands trying to be Pearl Jam, Creed, and/or Pantera. MS just sounds too derivative and monotonous. Also, these guys aren't the best musicians (they're not terrible, just not great), and it just doesn't sound like they're giving it their all. They seem to be holding something back. If these guys would just put a little more "oomph" into what they do, and try something more original, they might be a bit more interesting. This Sideshow isn't too Mighty, I'm afraid.
