Mother Mary Cyanide
"Not for Human Consumption"
indie release

by: Jonathan Mariante

A better name for this band would have been Mother Mary Melatonin. This CD is totally ZZZZZZ! I had trouble staying awake through it, but from what I could make out, they're taking some ideas from Nine Inch Nails, with high-tech, electronic sound effects and drum programming, and a singer who sounds like Trent Reznor, but these guys can't touch NIN in terms of talent or intensity! Not even close to being close. They also throw in rock guitars and some acoustic instruments, but I don't know why they bothered because it does nothing to spice things up at all. The opening track, "Prefacial", sounds like a video game. The next two songs, "Stimulus Response" (not much of either here!) and "Sculpture" are like NIN with power chords. The next one, "You're Not You" is a ballad in which they use an acoustic guitar, along with electronic, spacey sound effects. All three of these songs are played very slow and somber, too slow and somber for my taste. Next up was "Packaged Individuality", and I actually thought this one was better than the others on this disc. It's heavier and more intense. However, it doesn't save the album because the next, and last, song is "Endorphin", a very long and boring instrumental. I'm glad there's only six songs on this album, this is snoozeville! As musicians, these guys are only mediocre at best, and their songs are too slow and too long. Plus, they rely too much on the electronic side of their music, and it just seems so half-assed. They just design some sound FX, throe in a few power chords, and leave it at that. A little more effort and intensity is needed her. It wouldn't hurt to speed things up, either.
