By Jonthan Mariante Mystical Warning are a progressive metal band from Brazil. They are heavily influenced by bands like Dream Theatre, Fates Warning, and Savatage. Their singer, Clod Adamas, in fact, is very comparable to FW's John Arch, Zack Stevens of Savatage, or even Geoff Tate of Queensryche. Their self titled album kicks off with two relatively heavy tunes, "Revenge" and "Mystical Signs". Things slow down a bit on the next track, "Still My Burning Hands", which is followed by "Third Millenium", an almost thirteen minute long epic that is divided into five parts. It is one of two songs like this on the album, the second being the closing track "Empty Words", which is about the same length and divided into two parts. As good as these songs are, I have to say that I think two songs that long on one album is a bit much. Of the three remaining tracks, "Between Madness And Sanity" is a ballad, and "Time Can't Wait" and "Silence" and mid-tempo, prog-rock tunes. This album is everything you'd expect from a prog-metal album. The musicians are certainly talented, the playing is technical, sophisticated, and proficient, there is some classical music influence, and the music flows smoothly. However, I can't help but think that these guys are doing things a little too much by the book, and are just going through the motions. There are already a lot of Dream Theatre-type bands on the scene today. I'm not saying MW are rip offs; like I said, they are talented, and they do have potential. They just need to be a little more daring, branch out on their own a smidge, and put a bit more "oomph" into what they do. If they do this, they could be on their way to success. Another suggestion for the band is that they only put one epic-length song per album. That way, they'll have room for more songs, and will be able to add more variety to their music, and show the world what else they can do.
