"The Silence Is Broken"

By Jonathan Mariante Nelson, for those who may not be old enough to remember, are the duo of Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, the twin sons of late singer Rick Nelson. They debuted in 1990 with "After The Rain," made a splash in the music scene (if more for their looks than their music), had their 15 minutes of fame and then faded from the spotlight. They have been keeping a low profile ever since and now have a new album out titled "The Silence Is Broken." This album doesn't stray from the typical Nelson sound; Bon Jovi-esque lite rock with close vocal harmonies, although many of the songs are a tad ediger than Nelson's earlier material. In fact, two songs, "L.O.V.E. Me Not" and "Running Out Of Time," border on being metal, although they won't give you whiplash from headbanging either. Not that that's ever been Nelson's intention to begin with. There are also three ballads, "What About Me," "Tears Of Pain" and Love Me Today Part II," (hey, I didn't know there was a part one!). On this latter song, the brothers employ the use of what sounds like a gospel choir. Another song, "Why Oh Why," is good for a laugh. The closing track, "Feelings Of Love," sounds like the brothers as kids. I got a kick out of that too. The other songs are basically Nelson style mid tempo rockers. The opening track, "Ghostdance," is an ode to our Native American brethren and "Sunset Strip" is a cheeky tune. Although this style of music is not really my cup of tea (I like my metal a little...make that a lot, heavier) there's no denying the Nelson brothers are talented. They play well and their harmonies are good. The album won't kick your ass black and blue, the way I usually like it, but it is a plesant listening experience nonetheless. Nelson fans and some hair band nostalgists will like this album. And if you're a rivet head who wants to mellow out for a spell, give this a spin. http://www.perrisrecords.com
