NIFELHEIM
"Servants of Darkness"
Black Sun

By:Tate Bengtson

The more that I listen to this masterpiece of insanity, the better that it gets. In terms of all-out assaults on the senses, Nifelheim ranks near the top with its abrasive mixture of sick black metal and straight-forward frenetic thrash battering the ears with violent bursts of sonic carnage. Nifelheim's sound is firmly rooted at the primal center of black metal, with an approach that is raw like old Bathory, but an average tempo that has taken flight and launched itself into the stratosphere on the basis of sheer speed. The majority of Nifelheim's music is no frills upbeat extremity that is governed by twisted guitar riffs and relentless drum pounding - when taken together, the result is positively skullcrushing. Guitarist Tyrant adds a striking amount of color to the songs with his sophisticated yet raw approach, which allows such odes to peace and happiness as "The Bestial Avenger" and "Sadistic Bloodmassacre" to assume a particularly distinctive character. A few songs reveal attempts to explore different approaches, such as the bludgeoning but awkward "War of Demon" and the tightly-regimented militaristic progression of "Into The Morbid Black," although the band's typical ultra-fast blackthrash is its strength and is the approach that dominates Servants of Darkness.
