Proximity
"Won't Stay Down"
(Independent Release)

By Tate Bengtson

Even though Proximity is a relatively young band, beginning in mid-2000, I can't help but think that this is not the first project for the individual members involved in the band. There is a certain refinement to Proximity's infectious hard rock songwriting sensibilities that leads me to believe otherwise. With an approach that is reminiscent of later-period Soundgarden, Proximity very deftly maneuvers through the sludgy powerhouse "Hungry Sun," and smoothly flows into "Nailed Hands," where a tough bluesy swagger segues into dark passages that had me recalling some of the more sullen (in a good way) material from Alice In Chains' Facelift. Of course, with comparisons to both Soundgarden and AiC being made on paper, accusing the band of being a hold over from the grunge phenomenon may emerge, although Proximity certainly does not give any indication of being anachronistic in approach - it merely captures some of that gritty darkness that was characteristic of the grunge movement at its best. The songwriting is smart and catchy without being over-refined, and it refuses to fit into any category other than, quite simply, modern rock. Good stuff.
