Psychotic Existence

Tate Bengtson
An instrumental album
courtesy of Todd Nuzum, who concentrates more on
crafting tight songs rather than laying down flashy riffs and indulging
in guitar peelouts every step of the way. Perhaps the strongest aspect
of this album is that the guitars are let loose when need be, but are
smartly restrained when necessary, as heard on the third track. While
the pace generally sticks to a medium rock tempo, "What's Your
Deal?"
stands as one of the more impressive cuts with its almost thrashy
melodic guitar lick at the beginning, before cutting into a faster drum
rhythm that allows the guitars to paint a frenzied picture across the
soundscape. I am admittedly extremely picky when it comes to
instrumental albums and, while Psychotic Existence frankly does not
contain anything that I could really envision myself returning to in the
future, it is good for what it is, and a clear demonstration of Mr.
Nuzum's musical skills - not only as a guitarist, which is quite rightly
expected of any instrumental guitar album, but also as a strong
songwriter in his own right, which is a much rarer quality. Contact:
