"Old And Real Thoughts"
By Jonathan Mariante It seems as if the success of Hammerfall has produced a slew of similar sounding power metal bands in it's wake, which is certainly not a bad thing by any means, in fact, I love this style of music, so, let's get to Silver Blade, a power metal band from Brazil whose first album, "Old And Real Thoughts," just came into my possession. these guys aren't doing anything new (and since when has originality been the name of the game anyway) but they are capable musicians are are quite good at what they do. Their music is, as I mentioned, power/progressive metal in the vein of Hammerfall, Blind Guardian and Dream Theater. Singer Marcos Brandfer has a good voice and guitarists Ramon Malaguido and Roney Lopes can really shred. Bassist Elizeu Pereti and drummer Fabio Vieria make for a strong rhythm section and they gel well as a band. All of the songs are heavy, powerful tunes, except the closing track, "Live Again Forever," which is an acoustic ballad and nicely played on classical guitar, with some good vocal harmonies. Inclusion of a song like this sems to be becoming mandatory on most power metal albums and it does make for a good contrast against the heavy tunes. Other standout songs include the galloping "Run To The Adventure," the crunching "Sands Of Time," which starts off like a ballad but then kicks into high gear and the epic "Medieval History Part 2 (After The Battle)" (Part 1 is an acoustic intro to this song). "In The Land Of The Lost" is another cool tune but it has nothing to do with the old tv series like I had hoped. Most power metal fans should like this. There may be an overabundance of bands like this right now, but as I said, I'm a fan of this style of music, so, I'm not complaining. I think an overflowing well is better than a dry one. I also think the world could use more bands like this and less like Limp Bizkit. But, that's a different issue altogether.
