Despite raising my
initial interest, Vine's brand of electronic-tinged
modern rock laced with funky grooves and vocals quickly devolved into a
rather lacklustre and disappointing effort. There is definitely a ton of
potential at work here, but the band rarely lets loose with the heavier
tones that it desperately needs in order to contrast the mellower funk
influence that permeates this release in its entirety. While Vine's
sound is commercially palatable and fairly original, the songwriting
lacks the infectious energy and anthemic hooks necessary to fully
ingratiate itself with the rock music media; and that is a shame,
because this band is clearly very talented and, if it could play upon a
dynamic involving funky, groovy, mellowness and hard-hitting guitars,
perhaps in a manner similar to Puya, I would find myself more interested
in the songs being presented. At this point though, I am having a bit of
difficulty fully appreciating the band's approach. Promising in sound,
but disappointing in execution unless you are searching for an
independent adult contemporary funk band.
