Visionary are a prog-rock/metal band similar to Dream Theater or Fates Warning. I know every prog band is compared to those bands, but that is what they sound like. The liner notes say this album came out back in '96, when there was a prog-craze going on. Visionary are talented, if a little derivative of other bands of this ilk. Prog fans should like this. The first four songs, "Enigma", "Another Time, Another Place", "The Angry One", and "Eulogy" (which contains some nice, Queen-like piano and vocal harmonies) are all slow-paced and melancholy sounding, but have some crunchy guitar riffs and smooth, clear vocals from singers Kyle Morrill and Tony Horstmanshoff, both of whom also play drums (an interesting lineup). The next two songs, "Diggin' Your Own Grave" and "We Fly" see the band kicking into gear a little bit, but not for long, as the following tune, "Only One", is a ballad, quite a nice one at that. Then comes the closing track, "Friendly Fire", an outcry against war. At eight songs and thirty six minutes, this is not a long CD. As I said, these guys aren't doing anything different, but they are good at what they do. Prog fans should check this out.
