Vision Of Disorder By Vinnie Apicella |
|
Haven't heard of 'em in a while but right off I'm getting an extra dose of melody in the chorus of "Living To Die," something I didn't expect nor had a reason to on their past work. The difference is musicality then, in some respects, you can tell the difference from song to song rather than the relentless pounding that hammers away from one to the next, seemingly without beginning, without end. But for all the dramatic flair that comes strutting its way into the riff-heavy texture, there's plenty o' volume to go around for even the numbest of eardrums. "Southbound," following the opener "Living To Die," make a solid one-two combination from the opening bell and here's one that should make fast work of hard radio play lists. There's a Manson-esque eeriness to it all, not unusual, and not so obvious from the top end but noticeable over and under the choral arrangements. floral arrangements? Black? Maybe, the tunes are dark and as the band name, title and songs would indicate-"Itchin' To Bleed," Downtime Misery," "Pretty Hate," there's little in the way of bright white lights guiding your future. but alas, "Sunshine" does exist, quite unexpectedly, and in their Black Sunday best AIC imitation, drudge on about the unenviable characteristics shared by some, loathed by many. The title track's another ungodly act of will, thrust upon a first person journey into darkness from which safe return is all but guaranteed-"Heaven help me cause I'm out of my mind. Heaven help me cause I'm losing the fight. Welcome to this Hell." So they've taken the formulaic stuff bore of their Hard-Core/Aggro-rooted past and tempered it just a bit, refined many of those all-important verses, cleaned up the chorus, and granted a freer reign to the beat complex in a more edgier outtake for a freshness of sound without too much concern for the caustic clutter-think along with the likes of Soul Fly, Coal Chamber and the Deftones in transit
