Pain of Salvation This is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting, complex, and thought provoking musical ventures I have ever seen or heard. One could go as far to say that this is more progressive than progressive. It really raises the bar, very high, for music in general. This project goes beyond Pain Of Salvation being a mere band. They enlist an entire orchestra to be part of "BE" and take their own music to new levels. They blend elements of many musical styles-prog, rock, metal, folk, classical, jazz, world-into a unique style of their own. Along with the orchestra, they also use a variety of unusual instruments and musical techniques. "BE" is an opus of epic proportions. It is very complex, both musically and conceptually, almost like algebra that you hear. The concept deals with the purpose of life, the mysteries and questions of the human condition, the existence of God (one passage is a bunch answering machine messages for God from people with questions about life and its hardships. There's more of these in the bonus section), and what it all means. Parts of it are very emotional. On the rock side of things, there is influence from bands like Dream Theater, Rush, and Jethro Tull, but as I said, rock is not the only thing happening here, far from it. This is truly a unique musical experience, one that not many, even the best of musicians, could pull off. One comes away wondering how such a thing is possible. Pain Of Salvation have proven that it is, and this will be a tough act to follow. |
